The quintet of young, highly expressive musicians — all graduates of the Music Academies in Kraków and Katowice — was founded in 2019 by pianist Bartłomiej Leśniak. They describe themselves as “messengers of swing and powerful jazz sound.” Over the past few years, the quintet has developed a distinctive musical language rooted in a synthesis of 1960s jazz traditions, contemporary classical music, and free jazz. Direct Message – the second album by the band Horntet – features six original compositions by the band members: three by Bartłomiej Leśniak, two by Robert Wypasek, and one by Mikołaj Sikora. Each piece tells a story aligned with the idea of programmatic music, a concept Horntet consistently explores. The album also includes a tribute to their greatest inspirations. As a bonus track, it features Thelonious Monk’s Criss-Cross – a continuation of the tradition begun on Horntet’s debut album, which concluded with the composition Pannonica. Direct Message is not only a development of the themes introduced in their debut, but also a cohesive and thoughtfully crafted program in which the band’s powerful sound and immense energy come together in a clear statement – a direct message addressed to every listener.
