At the end of the 16th century, in England, a great music tradition was born – nowadays referred to as “lyra viol”. Different tunings began to be applied to the viola da gamba, in order to obtain better chordal playing (as in the Renaissance lute) as well as a fuller sound and a longer resonance. This pursuit has led to the creation of a huge repertoire, consisting of thousands of compositions for viola da gamba (of longer or shorter dimensions, but mostly solo pieces), which could be tuned in 59 different ways (so many tunings have been identified in the preserved repertoire). The double CD Lyra Viol Anthology presents a choice of pieces in 30 different tunings – 46 compositions of the greatest masters of English 17th c. music, almost 100 minutes of solo gamba repertoire performed by Polish gamba player Mateusz Kowalski.
